Chiang Mai

The journey to Chiang Mai took about 26 hours. I always complain about 880 and the potholes on Telegraph but let me tell you, the bus ride here was over a winding, dirt road. I've never been off-roading but I'm pretty sure this was it. The leg room was minimal so Carly's knee was not happy and O2 decided to leave his seat and lay down in the aisle. Lots of fun.

We got to Chiang Mai and found an awesome rastafarian/hippie guesthouse. The owners are incredibly nice and everything seems to be free - coffee, water, rides to wherever we need to go! A (one of the owners) even offered to take us out to the hot night spots.

Yesterday Carly and I just meandered through town. The heat was intense so at every opportunity we ducked into air conditioned shops. Around noon we decided that a Thai oil massage would be a great idea... and it was. The hour long rub down was so relaxing that we think we'll do a two-hour before we leave!

Last night we went to a Muay Thai boxing match. I know, I know. I usually can't stand boxing or fighting for it felt like something we should do. We got ringside seats and it was pretty incredible. Muay Thai means something like "the art of 8 limbs": feet, knees, hands, elbows. I actually am considering taking a class to learn how to do it because I think I would be very good at the kicking part! There were 5 matches in all and included 2 knockouts. The main event match was between a Thai guy and an English dude. They were only about one minute into the first round when the Thai guy seemed to fly toward the English dude throwing punches. When they separated the English guys' face was pouring blood. It didn't stop so the ref called a time out to check it out before calling the fight. Carly forced me to get up close to the boxer and take paparazzi shots of his battle wound - I've never seen anything so disgusting. The cut was about 2 inches long and sat on top of a bump the size of an egg. Yikes.

Today I'm off to take a cooking class while Carly and O2 lounge by the pool. I can't wait to learn how to make Pad Thai!
